• Hawaii Diaries #6 – Exploring Waimea Canyon and Hiking

We were up early to drive out to Waimea Canyon. It’s about a 30 minute drive from Poipu to Waimea which sits at the foot of the canyon. Waimea Canyon, A.K.A, “the Grand Canyon of the Pacific” is this massive gorge that stretches for miles. We saw it the other day in the helicopter but wanted to see it on foot too. There are two paths to go up to the canyon itself and we took Waimea Canyon drive as it has better views on the way up. One thing to note is that there’s no gas stations up there. In fact, there’s not a ton of gas stations on…

  • Hawaii Diaries #5 – Open Door Helicopter Tour and Shave Ice

We took an open door helicopter tour. It was as amazing as it was scary. I am no fan of heights; I’ll preface with that. The idea of going up there in an open door helicopter made me wary when my wife mentioned she booked it. I thought I’d just be a nervous ball up there and wouldn’t enjoy myself. I was right about the nervous ball part but not about enjoying myself; it was awesome! The first few minutes weren’t bad from a fear perspective. Our take off was smooth and the views started to open up once we left the airport. You can see the layout of the…

  • Hawaii Diaries #4 – ATV Tour, Poipu Beach and Spouting Horn

We were up early in the morning to head to our ATV Tour. My wife booked the early morning ranch tour with Kipu Ranch Adventures. I was feeling a bit better after my seasick adventures as we drove over. The sun was just rising as we put on our gear and listened to the rules. My wife was looking cool in her ATV gear. It was rather chilly in the morning so we brought rain jackets. They give you a scarf to keep and it’s definitely worth wearing since you don’t want unknown mud in the mouth. They took us to the ATVs after we geared up.  The ATVs can…

  • Hawaii Diaries #3 – Maha’ulepu, Hiking and Dolphins too!

The plan for day 3 was to explore the southern beaches starting with the Maha’ulepu beaches. Our afternoon was already booked with a catamaran ride so we didn’t have a ton of time to waste. We popped Gillin’s Beach into the GPS and set off. The Maha’ulepu area is somewhat off the beaten path. You drive down a paved road(Poipu Rd) past a hotel and suddenly find yourself on a red dirt road. I started to see why people like to rent Jeep’s as my Hyundai bounced up and down the rocky terrain. This is an area where 4WD certainly might help. We quickly ran into an obstacle in the…

  • Hawaii Diaries #2 – Exploring Kapaa, Chickens Galore and a Costco Visit

Hawaii Rocks. It was nice to finally see it in the day time after a day of travel. The goal of day two was to get more acclimated to the island but it turned into a day of Exploring Kapaa, a small town on the east side of the island. I started the day early as I am today. It’s real easy to wake up at 4 A.M. local time here when you’re from the east coast. After all, it’s 9 A.M. my time right now and I never sleep in late. The sun hadn’t come up yet and the roosters were making noise. Did I mention there’s tons of…
